Age: 27
Appearance: here and here

History: wiki. also, here is some background information about the mechanics of his world.

CR AU (Optional): n/a

Personality:
Positive Trait:
loyal: Raleigh prefers substance in his relationships – a good, solid foundation is a prerequisite for anything substantial in his life, and once he allows himself to connect with someone, he's there for life. Raleigh does have some trouble engaging in new relationships because relationships are built on trust and it’s difficult for him to be pulled out of his shell long enough to be able to give someone that chance to prove themselves. Once he bridges the gap and decides to trust someone, they have his whole heart, and he would do anything for them. Need someone to back you up in a bar fight? Raleigh's got your back. He doesn't like bullies or greedy people, and will stick up for those that can't defend themselves.

Mako appears in his life and almost from the moment he meets her he's dedicated. She earns his respect almost immediately with her forthright attitude with him and in turn, he fights for her to become his copilot, pressing the Marshal into it when he clearly doesn't want to.

Negative Trait:

temperamental: Raleigh Becket has an anger problem. It can manifest slowly, like molasses in January, but it can also be sudden and furious. Once he snaps and is pushed over the edge, he can become violently angry. In the novelization, his foreman at the wall needles him and pisses him off to the point that Raleigh literally smashes the man's head down onto a beer can and walks off, leaving him on the ground. We also see it evidenced in his confrontation with Stacker when he grabs the mans arm - and his rage with Chuck. Raleigh snaps and gets into a very physical fight with Chuck, nearly dislocating his shoulder. If Chuck's father hadn't stopped them, it's entirely possible Raleigh would have rendered Chuck unable to jockey, which would have compromised the entire mission. It's a dangerous flaw to have, and something he actively has to work to control.

Negative Trait:

depressed:
When Raleigh loses Yancy it completely shatters Raleigh, and he sinks into a deep, dark depression from which he never truly pulls himself free. Yancy was his focal point, the North Star, his moral compass, and when he died, Raleigh lost himself in the abyss, the pit of despair swallowing him whole. Yancy was still connected to him via the Drift when he died, and that means Raleigh experienced his brothers last few moments with him while still in the Drift. He felt everything – his pain, his terror, his helplessness. He felt Yancy die, and Raleigh equates it to having a piece of his soul literally torn from his body, leaving him helpless and adrift, moving through life in a fog. He solo pilots Gipsy back to the shore, screaming so much the entire time – from pain and anguish – that when he collapses on the beach, he’s hoarse and unable to focus on anything other than the deafening silence in his head and a ringing in his ears.

In the years after Yancy's death, Raleigh withdraws from his friends along with the general public - he's disgraced, a fallen jaeger pilot who was dishonorably discharged and ultimately responsible for the death of his brother. He faded into anonymity on purpose; the less people he allowed to be close, the better.

Numbing himself to relationships (platonic or otherwise) becomes second nature, and instead of seeking healthy coping mechanisms he instead falls into destructive habits like drinking too much, taking the riskiest positions on the wall, going days without sleep. Raleigh spends five years of his life in self imposed exile, working on a wall that he knows is futile, that he knows won’t protect the population but he thinks that maybe, just maybe it’s something that will give people hope. If he can’t pilot (and he can’t, he won’t) then he can keep his hands busy on something that humanity (not Raleigh) deems worthwhile.

Negative Trait:

unpredictable: Raleigh is notoriously unpredictable and impulsive - Mako tells him, to his face, that he makes decisions that get people injured, or worse.

"You are unpredictable. You have a habit of deviating from standard combat techniques. You take risks and injure yourself and your crew. I don't think you're the right man for this mission."

Truthfully, Raleigh agreed with Mako. Raleigh has always been a rash individual, making impulsive decisions that ended up in bar fights, in trouble with commanding officers, and even arguments with his brother. He frequently disobeys orders (as evidenced by he and Yancy getting the boat) because he thinks it’s the right thing to do, and it can often end up with disastrous consequences. He blames himself for his brothers death, it was his decision, his call, and it was a bad one.

Powers and Abilities: Raleigh trained at the Jaeger Academy and was a Jaeger pilot. He’s military, highly disciplined and well trained in a kind of…robot bushido and can handle himself in high pressure situations. He’s also piloted a jaeger on his own, which is usually something that will kill the pilot – hence the need for two. How this affects him long term remains to be seen.

He also experiences ghost-drifting, detailed below as stated by Beacham;
A rare, unanticipated consequence of the neural handshake is that a crew will sometimes find that their link remains somewhat active (though muted) even after they’ve disconnected from the hardware. This will invariably manifest as shared dreaming. The condition has known to the pilots as ghost drifting. It is not common, but the first reported case came reliably from Doctor Caitlin Lightcap herself, the inventor of the Pons system. Even so, Doctor Lightcap and the PPDC’s other experts remain at a loss to explain the mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

According to the novelization, Raleigh and Yancy experienced this in Lima and spent half a night finishing one another’s sentences. Raleigh experiences this with Mako as well, though it’s not on the same level as the brothers.
